BACKGROUND: Fourth graders are learning about the solar system! In class, we are creating a model of the solar system, demonstrating the moon phases, creating our universe in a box to see the seasonal changes of our constellations, identifying our planets in our solar system, creating NASA space exploration timelines, and much more!
COST: This project does NOT have to cost any money!! You can make a simple poster (Mrs. Williams will provide 1 poster board per student upon request). However, if you want to create a more complex project, that is completely up to you!
TASK: Your task at home is to create a model of the solar system using your class notes. You can create the physical solar system model any way you like! Be creative. . . you can draw it on a poster, create a Styrofoam ball model, use clay and toothpicks, create a mobile hanger, make a shoebox solar system, design a popsicle stick model, create a solar system in a jar, create a sequential strip, etc. Check Pinterest and the below previous project pictures for more fun ideas!
Where do we get the information? We will learn all the content required in this project in class through our labs and activities. If you find your child’s science notes lacking, please check my recorded lessons on Schoology & assist your child with their notes, so you have all the information.
PURPOSE: JSA is a school of the arts & STEAM- so the purpose of this project is to creatively work together with your child to review all the concepts we have learned during this unit!
PROJECT CRITERIA & POINTS: This project will be worth 10 points. Each piece below is worth 1 point:
1. Creatively draw/design the solar system in the correct order. (1 point)
2. Label all 8 planets by name. (1 point)
3. Label the inner planets and the outer planets. (1 point)
4. Write 2 characteristics of inner planets. (1 point)
5. Write 2 characteristics of outer planets (1 point)
6. Somewhere on your design, explain what ROTATION is and what it causes (1 point)
7. Somewhere on your design, explain what REVOLUTION is and what it causes (1 point)
8. Create and label our MOON (1 point).
9. Somewhere on your design, indicate what GALAXY we live in. (1 point)
10. Label the Sun and give 2 facts about it. (1 point)
Bonus points:
11. Express or Explain the moon phases. (1 point)
12. Somewhere on your design, explain why we can see different constellations during different seasons (see "universe in a box" lab for help). (1 point)
Presentation: Students will bring their projects into school on the specified due date (Jan. 5, 2022) and will present their projects to the class for a grade, using the above criteria. Students will get 1-4 minutes to present (so we can get through all the projects). Projects are worth 10 points … and 2 points off for each day late. Students will bring their projects back home after they present, unless admin chooses to display them. Please Note: Only original physical projects are accepted; no store brought projects or photos of a project will be accepted.
